What characteristics distinguish a professional tipper from a gambler?

There are worlds between the two characters mentioned above, yet it is possible for the initial "loser" to change from Saul to Paul. That's what we want to talk about here.

Every human being has the ability to develop. Those who make mistakes at the beginning have a good chance of avoiding them in the future through a little conscious analysis and then being among the winners. In order to achieve this, however, many people have to work a little on themselves, because not every character is born with these three extremely important qualities or abilities:
  • 1
    Self-control
  • 2

    Patience

  • 3

    Discipline

Let's get straight to point 1, i.e. self-control. What is meant by this in the context of sports betting? Emotions have absolutely no place in this area. "I don't like that jockey or that boxer, I would never bet on him." Such thoughts alone are absolutely taboo. In sports betting, equal treatment without emotion applies. Every participant is rigorously analysed according to the same criteria, and point systems are a good way of doing this. If a favourite emerges, the bets are placed consistently.

Point 2 addresses patience. This is particularly about the endurance over many years to trust one's own strategy, provided it has substance, and to stick to it consistently, because sports betting is by no means characterised by short-term success, it is rather comparable to a marathon run. In the so-called "downstream phases" you sometimes lose every bet for weeks and months. There is simply nothing to be done. Now it is essential to avoid a loss of control. What does this look like?

Point 3, discipline, provides an answer to this question. There is this total annoyance about all the money that has already been lost. Recouping it supposedly only works with even more bets and higher stakes. This kind of "biting" automatically leads to the "all-in phase", which means that all remaining capital is bet in a game that one is quite sure about.

At this point, we can only warn against using money that is needed for completely different things in life and should be used in a correspondingly different way, for example to transfer the rent. There are even more extreme cases where people bet on credit in their desperation. Never do anything like that!

In any case, there are two scenarios here:

  1. The "last" bet of rebelling is lost again. Now you are at the end financially, which in most cases leads to a deep crisis within the family, which in the best case will insist that you start addiction therapy.
  2. The fact that the big bet finally turns a profit does not necessarily make things better in the long run. Encouraged by the "good hand" that you have once again had, you now continue with the betting, whereby the swollen self-confidence tempts you to place higher stakes. At some point, the situation outlined under the first point occurs, only at an even higher level.

Character traits are not set in stone

There are many typists, probably even most of them, who do not possess all three of the character traits just described. However, this does not mean that all these people end up as losers, because there is a whole range of courses in which everyone can learn self-control, patience and discipline.
Those who engage in them regularly emerge from them as a completely different person who is characterised, among other things, by an inner, consolidated calm, stamina and nerves of steel, and it is precisely this staying power that is needed in sports betting.

Are the chances of success greater if you have more money?

Anyone who believes this nonsense has already lost everything. No, on the contrary, money, or rather the level at which we place sports bets, should not play a role at all. What winners focus on is the strict avoidance of the vicious circle of ever higher stakes to compensate for losses suffered, as described at the beginning, and the unconditional will to be better than the bookmaker in the long run, i.e. to beat him. This can only be achieved with a stable character that does not allow for weakness.

The waiting time alone can sometimes be years, depending on the economic and political situation. This is why patience is so important in "betting", which is what investing in shares is all about. Winners heed the golden rule:

Only play with money you don't absolutely need!
